Stone Creek Baptist Church History

"The following items are extracts from the chuch history read at the recent centennial by the prsent pastor, Rev. G. W. Tharpe:
   Stone Creek Twiggs County Baptist Church was constituted on September 3rd, 1808 by Micagle Fulgum and Henry Hooten.
  At its organization the following members composed the membership: Stansel Bashee, James Powell, Theopulus Pierce, James Rodgers, Lucrecia Powell, Susannah Pierce, Mary Bashee, Ann Farmer, Mary Rodgers and Rachel Collins.
   The building was located three and one-half miles below Dry Branch; second location, about one and a half miles from Dry Branch on Stone Creek, third, where it now stands. More than 2,000 presons have been received into its fellowship. At its greatest revival seventy-two members were received.
   There have gone out from its fellowship nineteen preachers, viz: James Griffin, C.A. Tharp, William Bowden, James Pierson, W. E. A. Wall, James Pierce, John Dennis, James McDaniel, B. F. Tharp, R. B. Edmonds, W. D. Horne, Washington Tharp, A. E. Nash, J. C. Solomon, Simon Tharp, Jack Smith, B. A. Smith and G. W. Tharp.
   The following preachers have served the church as pastors: Henry Hooten, three years; Vincent A. Tharp, fourteen years; Theopulus Pierce, two years, C. A. Tharp, twenty-nine years, also as clerk and deacon; Sylvanus Landrum, one year; G. R. McCall, six years; Washington Tharp, two years; W. D. Horne, seven years; P. W. Edge, thirteen years; B. F. Tharpe, two years; B. S. Raily, one year; G. W. Tharp, twenty years.
   The committee on the second removal on January 22, 1842, was composed of T. S. Chappell, Hardy Solomon, J. A. Tharp, J. A. Nelson and James Wall.
  The committee on the new building January 20, 1850, was composed of C. A. Tharp, J. A. Tharp, T. S. Chappell, John Davis, and J. A. Nelson.
   The present building was dedicated on the fifth Sunday in September, 1850."

(Note: In 1953 a tornado, which went through Twiggs County, demolished the old Stone Creek Church.)
